Machinery and manufacturing documentation exists to keep people safe and equipment running. That is not a marketing statement. It is a regulatory and operational fact. The EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 takes effect on 20 January 2027, replacing the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. There is no transition period. The old rules cease and the new rules begin on the same day. For any manufacturer placing machinery on the EU market, this changes documentation requirements in ways that affect translation scope, structure, and timing. Organisations that have not started preparing will find themselves under pressure that was entirely avoidable.

Installation guides for equipment weighing several tonnes, where sequence and safety warnings must be unambiguous. Technical files that form the backbone of conformity assessment.
The stakes are specific and consequential. Unclear operating instructions create safety risk on the factory floor. Incomplete CE technical documentation means non-compliance — and non-compliance means the product cannot legally be placed on the market. A poorly translated service manual means a field engineer cannot do their job, which means the machine stays down, which means production stops. The cost of that downtime is measured in hours of lost output, not in the price of the translation.
In our project data, machinery is Bubbles’ second-highest revenue sector, accounting for 7.89% of all projects. Elliott Turbomachinery, a subsidiary of Japan’s Ebara Corporation, designs, manufactures, and services turbomachinery used in critical industrial applications worldwide. Manufacturing facilities in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Brazil serve a global customer base across the energy, petrochemical, and process industries.
Bubbles has worked with Elliott since 2005. Over two decades, that relationship has produced hundreds of individual translation projects, a number that reflects not just longevity but the sheer breadth of what Elliott needs translated.
The challenge with Elliott is that the content rarely stays within a single discipline. A project might involve highly technical machinery documentation — detailed specifications for a centrifugal compressor destined for a refinery in the Middle East — alongside financial content for the same deal and the complex legal contracts that govern it. Fortress Technology manufactures industrial metal detection systems for the food industry. Their equipment protects consumers and production lines across bakery, meat processing, ready meals, dairy, confectionery, and fresh and frozen food applications. With manufacturing operations in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Brazil, and a global customer base, Fortress occupies a position that is both technically demanding and commercially critical.
What sets Fortress apart in their market is that they are the only metal detection manufacturer that custom-builds each detector head to the customer’s specific requirements. Every system is configured for a particular application, a particular production environment, and a particular set of detection parameters. That level of customisation extends directly to the documentation.
A metal detector system designed for a high-speed bakery line produces different documentation than one configured for a frozen meat processing facility. The technical specifications differ. The installation requirements differ. The operating parameters differ. The cleaning and maintenance protocols differ. Each document set is specific to its application, and that specificity must survive translation intact. A generic approach to food industry terminology is not sufficient. Since 2014, Bubbles has served as Ishida’s language services partner, supporting the company’s expansion across multiple global markets. The scope of that partnership extends well beyond technical manuals. Ishida’s translation requirements span complex mechanical documentation, legal agreements, HR materials, and commercial content — the full range of documentation that a multinational manufacturer generates as it operates across borders.
The coordination challenge with Ishida is significant. A Japanese-headquartered company, selling into European, Asian, Middle Eastern, and South American markets, generates documentation that must work across cultures, regulatory environments, and technical conventions that vary from country to country. A weighing machine sold into Germany must meet different documentation standards than the same machine sold into Brazil. The technical content may be substantively identical, but the regulatory framing, the language, and the conventions of the target market must all be correct.

When a manufacturer is launching products into multiple markets simultaneously, the translation workload arrives in parallel, not in sequence. InSinkErator, a Whirlpool brand, manufactures specialist products including hot water taps, water chillers, and garbage compactors. These are products that combine mechanical engineering with domestic installation requirements — a combination that produces documentation spanning technical specifications, installation procedures, warranty terms, and consumer-facing content.
Bubbles has worked with InSinkErator since 2015. Over nearly a decade, that partnership has produced close to one hundred individual projects, covering a range of material that reflects the full lifecycle of a consumer-facing manufactured product. Installation manuals. Technical specifications. Control unit manuals. Warranty documents. Social media content. Website copy. Press releases. Newsletters. HR documentation. The diversity of document types within a single client relationship is notable.
The translations serve multiple European markets, requiring a breadth of language coverage that must remain consistent across every document type. A warranty term translated one way in the installation manual and a different way on the website creates confusion for the customer and risk for the manufacturer. Maintaining terminological consistency across nearly a hundred projects, multiple document types, and multiple languages is a discipline that accumulates over time. One of the more technically interesting aspects of the InSinkErator work is the requirement for direct non-English-to-non-English translation. Some projects require translating from one European language directly into another, without routing through English as an intermediary. This is not a convenience. It is a quality decision. When content originates in French and is needed in German, translating French to English and then English to German introduces two opportunities for meaning to shift. Translating directly from French to German preserves accuracy. Their equipment — case formers, partition inserters, case packers, case sealers — is found in production facilities worldwide, and the documentation that accompanies it must work for engineers and operators across every market the company serves.
Bubbles has worked directly with DS Smith offices in the United Kingdom, the United States, Switzerland, and Germany since 2008. The core of the translation work is technical documentation: user manuals, service manuals, and product information sheets, translated into a substantial array of languages that reflects DS Smith’s global footprint.
What distinguishes the DS Smith relationship is how it has evolved alongside the client’s own corporate development. Over the years, DS Smith’s packaging division became part of the broader Rapak and subsequently Liquibox group. Corporate restructuring of this kind frequently disrupts supplier relationships. New procurement processes, new management structures, and new strategic priorities can sever partnerships that were delivering good results.
In this case, the opposite occurred. As the organisation expanded and ventured into new markets, the translation requirements grew with it. New languages were added. New product lines brought new documentation. New offices in new territories needed the same translation infrastructure that the established offices relied on. Bubbles scaled alongside the client, maintaining the terminology consistency and technical understanding that had been built over years of working with the same product range.
The DS Smith story is, in many ways, the simplest to explain: a manufacturer that expanded internationally and needed a translation partner that could keep pace. J Barnsley Cranes: Where Documentation Is a Safety System
J Barnsley Cranes is one of the United Kingdom’s leading crane manufacturers, specialising in explosion-proof cranes for the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. Their product range includes EOT overhead cranes, spark-resistant manual cranes and hoists, jib cranes, and Goliath and Semi-Goliath cranes. This is equipment designed to operate in environments where a single spark can be catastrophic.
Since 2013, Bubbles has provided translation services for J Barnsley’s major international engineering projects — commissions that require cranes to be installed and operated in locations including Algeria, Kazakhstan, Russia, Qatar, and Norway. Each of these countries has its own regulatory framework, its own language requirements, and its own expectations for the documentation that must accompany safety-critical equipment.
The documentation scope is extensive. Installation manuals. Operating manuals. Maintenance manuals. Technical drawings. Shipping manuals. Spare parts documentation. Datasheets. Health and safety nameplates. Each document type serves a different user — the installation engineer, the crane operator, the maintenance technician, the site safety officer — and each must be translated into the native language of the country where the crane will be commissioned.
This is not optional. Regulatory approval for explosion-proof equipment in international petrochemical facilities requires documentation in the local language. A crane cannot be commissioned if the operating manual has not been translated to the required standard. A health and safety nameplate that has not been translated into the local language does not meet compliance requirements. The documentation is not supplementary to the equipment. It is part of the regulatory approval process.

Translation memory reduces cost over time. Machinery documentation has inherently high repetition between product variants. A service manual for a 200-tonne overhead crane shares substantial content with the manual for a 150-tonne variant of the same crane. Translation memory captures those reused segments so they are not translated — or charged — twice. Over a multi-year relationship and a broad product range, the cumulative cost reduction is significant. But translation memory only works if you stay with the same provider. Switch agencies, and you start the accumulation from zero.
Direct non-English-to-non-English translation is sometimes essential, not just convenient. When source content exists in one language and is needed in another, routing through English as an intermediary introduces a second point of potential drift. For safety-critical documentation, that additional risk is unnecessary. Translating directly between the source and target languages preserves meaning more reliably. It requires specific translator expertise, but for machinery documentation where precision matters, it is worth the effort to source it.
Service engineers in the field need documentation that works. This means accuracy and clarity, not literary quality. A maintenance manual is not a novel. It is a set of instructions that a technician will follow while standing next to a machine, often under time pressure. The translation must be unambiguous, correctly sequenced, and written in the technical register that the target audience expects. Elegance is irrelevant. Functionality is everything.
Long-term partnerships produce better results than project-by-project procurement. Every client relationship in this compilation has lasted a decade or more. That is not coincidence. Terminology consistency, translator familiarity with the product range, established quality processes, and faster turnaround times are all products of sustained engagement.
