Olympic countdown

Written by Bubbles Translation Tuesday, 26 July 2011 15:21

The countdown has begun for the world's largest sporting event. At exactly one year from tomorrow the UK will be officially launching the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, with the eyes of the world watching.

We're finding it hard to imagine what 'The Big Smoke' will look like amid all the Olympic activity. Luckily to mark the occasion the International Olympic Committee will be holding a show stopping event in London's Trafalgar Square tomorrow, Wednesday 27th July 2011. The whole world will be invited to watch the live broadcast of one of the most important milestones in the UK's history, giving audiences a first glimpse of how the capital city will be 'dressed' when it's adorned with Olympic decorations!

The entire country is waiting in anticipation on what is set to be an extraordinary event, but it's not just the UK that has been making provisions for the Olympics. Yes, athletes from over 200 different countries are expected to compete in 26 Olympic sports and 20 Paralympic sports at the London 2012 Games. What's more, it's estimated that over 70,000 volunteers will be employed for the games…no doubt many of them required to translate a multitude of different languages as visitors from across the globe descend on the capital.

In the weeks running up to the Olympics, some countries will take up residence in various landmark buildings dotted around the city. The 'Olympic houses', as they are known, will be transformed in to vibrant 'guest centres' showcasing the best of each countries' culture, tourism, music, arts, sports, food and entertainment, as well as much more. Athletes, celebrities, dignitaries and the public will share the 'Olympic experience' under one roof.

The following nations have already confirmed their 'Olympic house' London addresses for 2012; Switzerland, Jamaica, Russia, Belgium, Japan, China, Holland, Italy, Brazil, France, Czech, and Nigeria. More participating countries are set to announce their residence this year… so watch this space.

The question is though, which house will you be visiting in 2012, and more to the point, what new language will you be putting to the test as a result?
