Oh Hello Oscars!
The Oscars has now been aired on the box to a global audience of more than 100 million people worldwide. While the general public eagerly awaited to see which actors pulled off the best designer outfits and those who failed miserably, we found ourselves reverting away from the obvious red carpet crash couture and gossip, to focus on the good cinema and the actors who've glued us to our screens.
Considered to be the world's most high profile film event, it was a prime target for the media to dissect every designer outfit on the carpet piece by piece, ensuring that any 'celeb' who had committed the ultimate fashion faux pas, will now hear about it until the next ceremony.
Our favourite part of the 83rd Oscars night was of course the 'Foreign Language Film' category! We were a little bit excited to see who won the 'Best foreign film' category, purely because so many of our native translators had tuned in. Here is a list of five prestigious award nominees, all of whom wanted to get their mitts on the filmmaking's highest honour....but there could only be one winner.
The Foreign Language Film categories were as follows:
Biutiful – (Spain) In the dark realm of Barcelona's sweatshops and exploited illegal immigrants, a criminal named Uxbal has managed to retain aspects of his humanity. When an unexpected turn of events throws his life into chaos, Uxbal must provide for the future of his two children as he confronts the harsh realities of the life he has chosen.
Dogtooth – (Greece) The three children of a factory manager have been raised in complete isolation, spending their lives shut up in the family's house and learning only their mother and father's bizarre version of the outside world. As they enter adulthood, however, the three begin to test the boundaries imposed by their parents' unrelenting and often cruel domination.
In a better world – (Denmark) When schoolboys Christian and Elias are involved in a violent incident, their fathers are initially unable to grasp the full implications of the boys' actions. Elias's father, Anton, an idealistic doctor often absent from home while he works in an African refugee camp, tries to communicate his own commitment to non-violence to the boys, but the troubled Christian continues to see Anton's beliefs as a sign of weakness.
Incendies – (Canada/ France)Following the death of their mother, Nawal, twins Jeanne and Simon attempt to carry out her final wishes and deliver letters on her behalf. Their efforts will take them to her native Lebanon, where, as a young woman, Nawal underwent experiences during the period of the country's civil war that she has never shared with her children.
Outside the Law (Hors-la-loi) – (Algeria) In the wake of World War II, as the Algerian independence movement gains support, three brothers follow very different paths. Saïd rejects political involvement in favour of moneymaking schemes, while Abdelkader is imprisoned for his revolutionary actions and Messaoud fights for the French in Indochina.
And the winner was announced as "In a Better World," in the category for Best Foreign Language Film. It marked the third time that a film from Denmark has taken the prize, following "Babette's Feast" in 1988 and "Pelle the Conquerer" in 1989.
