Are you switched on?
What do Lemar, Kate Moss, Justin Bieber and Radio One's Aled Jones all have in common? Yes, you've guessed it; they've all officially switched-on Christmas lights in some form or other over the last couple of weeks.
So, as towns and cities across the UK become illuminated, it can only mean one thing. Yes folks, it may only be the beginning of December but Christmas has well and truly arrived here in the UK with thousands of people gearing up for yet another festive season.
Although be warned. I recently read that every year nearly 12,500 people are hospitalised due to Christmas decorating related accidents. It might be worth getting a professional electrician to check your lights if they haven't been out of the attic for a while. Alternatively you could just take advantage of the numerous light attractions across the globe . . . and luckily there are plenty to pick from.
First up, Brazil and the city of Rio de Janeiro who have marked the beginning of Christmas with the world's largest floating Christmas tree! Yes you've read right, a giant floating Christmas tree in the middle of a bustling city. In fact one hundred thousand people flocked to see the official unveiling of the record breaking tree measuring 85 metres floating on the Rodrigo de Frietas Lagoon. Weighing in at 542 tonnes, and adorned with 3.3 million twinkling lights, the towering structure is set to become one of Brazil's main tourist attractions during the Christmas period. It is expected to attract more than a million people from now until it is switched off on January 6th 2012.
Next up is New York City and the tremendous Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Centre, which will be illuminated on 30th November. The 74th traditional Norwegian Spruce stands tall in the courtyard, decorated with over five miles of 30,000 multi-coloured lights and mounted with a very large Swarovski crystal star right at the top! That's going to be one hell of an electricity bill isn't it!
Closer to home though why not check out London's Christmas illuminations. For more than 60 years, Regent Street has seen a fantastic array of Christmas lights to ensure that your shopping experience has more magic than Father Christmas' workshop.
This year Regent Street has some of the biggest Christmas light displays in the capital city, with Christmas light figures from the Christmas film "Arthur Christmas". London's famous Carnaby Street is also adorned with holographic red berry garlands, green holly leaves and giant mistletoe chandeliers – in fact each chandelier contains 22 berries that change in colour and are coordinated to some Christmassy tunes!
I'm sure that this extravaganza is not everyone's cup of tea, but like it or not there's no escaping Christmas. So sit back, raise a glass and remember tis the season to be jolly! Of course whether you choose to light up your house is entirely up to you!
